In the impressive clip, shared on Instagram, a caretaker is seen offering a whole watermelon to a hippopotamus, who eagerly opens its mouth to enjoy the fruit, chewing it leisurely once it manages to grab it.
The video has already received over 14 million views and thousands of comments from internet users who were impressed by the scene. “He eats it with seeds and all,” said one. “What power,” commented another. “Animal without conscience. Wastes half of its food,” joked a third internet user.
According to experts, hippos can open their mouths up to 180°, and their lower canines can exceed 35 cm in length. Because of this, a whole watermelon easily fits into a hippo’s mouth, which devours the juicy fruit in one bite.
